A couple of photos from the Cologne "Street" Carnival that exploded into five days of beery, costumey goodness and action today.

Background: Traditionally, the Carnival "session" (the time for Carnival parties and events) runs from November 11th at 11:11 until Ash Wednesday. The "Strassenkarneval" ("street" Carnival) is the last 5 days of this time, when the celebrations hit the streets. We are talking serious partying here. A million visitors come to the city every day for parades (Cologne's population is 1 million so it gets pretty full here), dancing and the occasional refreshing beverage or two. Today in Carnival-Thursday, "Weiberfastnacht" or "Weiberfastelavond" in the Kölsch dialect - on this day the city goes wild as the revelers begin to get a year of waiting to party out of their systems.
