HornCologne's quotes

Now I know why I love/hate it ...

"Starbucks - the yuppie McDonald's"

— Chris Hardwick - Wired Magazine online edition

Open Source - the Fine Line

I think there's a fine line between open source and stupidity.

— Massimo Banzi, co-inventor and producer of the open source Arduino computing platform.

The real key to success?

"I may not have all the answers, but I'm always available!

— Douglas Hubler - 22.AUG.2008

I'm just saying ...

In the New Testament, Jesus tells us to help the poor 3000 times. He never tells us homosexuality is a sin.

Those who are willing to sacrifice their basic liberties ...

Funny, for all surveillance, Osama bin Laden is still free -- and we're not. Guess who's winning the "war on terror?"

The title of this post also refers to a quote, of course. It is attributed to Benjamin Franklin. Currently I can't find a definitive wording, but the gist of it is clear, I think. Here are two versions. I like the second best:

"Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

"Those who are willing to sacrifice their basic liberties to assure their security deserve neither."

— Cory Doctorow on BoingBoing, in reference to this BBC article.

On the worth of the bassoon ...

"You think that bassoons are just kind of ... advanced party-favors until they're not there. Then there's such a hole in the sound and you realize how much they contribute to the orchestra."

— Mark Taddei in Orchestral Repertoire for Winds at Victoria University, one Sunday in the late 1980s ... when the bassoons didn't show up.

The Mysteries of CSS

"I already taught you everything I know about CSS when I showed you how to put a red border around a div."

— Robert Douglass, April 2008.

Public morality

"Dr. Pollack is certainly right in maintaining that religion, particularly Christianity, ruins public morality. Good deeds are often the result not of conviction or inner compulsion, but are done almost without exception, in order to shorten the doer's time in Purgatory and assure him a place in Heaven. Hence many people generally considered kind-hearted are in fact nothing of the sort. They are merely concerned that their deeds be seen and acknowledged."

— Alma Mahler, February 23, 1898

No risk, no gain

"Nur wer nichts tut macht keine Fehler."
"Only those who do nothing make no mistakes."

Agony aunt

"Dear Sally,
I'm 13 years old now, and many of my friends have already got their periods. Some of them have been having them for 2 years!
I feel stupid asking this, but is there anything wrong with me?

Yours sincerely,

Micheal"
